Field of Dreams
by ML

She steps out to get some ice, and a waft of scent makes her go still, remembering. A field, lit only by the crescent moon and the dancing lights just out of reach.

Where was it that she and Melissa used to chase fireflies? Melissa, predictably, said they were fairies. Dana was young enough to believe her until they actually caught one in a jar, and then she could tell it was just a bug. She wasted no time telling Melissa so.

But somehow, deep inside her, she still wishes that she could believe in fairies.

There’s a field behind the motel, and Scully sets her ice bucket down, drawn by the scent of freshly-mown hay and the crooked finger of moon.

She stands in the middle of the field, eyes closed, breathing the summer air and remembering when. She smiles, but tears leak out from under her lids.

Distantly, she hears the crunch of straw underfoot as someone approaches. She opens her eyes and sees the tiny light, far at the edge of the field, zigzagging around like the memory of a firefly.

She smiles and hugs herself. He is her own personal firefly, her light in the darkness. He helps her to believe again.

end.
